GCTE Awards and Grants
- Teacher of the Year: The GCTE Teacher of the Year award recognizes an ELA teacher for their contributions to literacy and learning in the K-12 and college classrooms. Applicants will be recognized and asked to share their exceptional teaching practices in Scribbles 'N Bits (includes a $250 honorarium).
- Ellis Teacher Candidate Award: GCTE invites applications for the W. Geiger Ellis Teacher Candidate Award. For twenty-four years, W. Geiger “Guy” Ellis taught for the University of Georgia’s Department of Language Education and prepared hundreds of ELA teachers for the profession. As a valued GCTE board member, Ellis organized numerous GCTE conferences. This $1000 award honors Dr. Ellis’s legacy in spring-boarding outstanding Georgia preservice ELA teachers toward their careers and their involvement in GCTE.
- Future Teachers of Color Award: This award recognizes outstanding future teachers of color. To be eligible for this award, college or university students must be English Language Arts Education majors; first-time presenters at the GCTE annual conference; persons of color; and student teaching interns, recent completers of student teaching, or graduate students enrolled in English teacher preparation programs (includes a $250 honorarium).
- Teachers for the Dream Award: This award recognizes outstanding teachers of color. Interested applicants must be full-time English/ Language Arts (ELA) teachers at the middle, secondary, or college level in education (includes a $250 honorarium).
- Lifetime Achievement Award: The Bolton Newland Lunceford/Louise Newland Capen Lifetime Achievement Award, GCTE's greatest honor, is bestowed upon individuals who are recognized for a lifetime of distinguished service in the teaching of English and the language arts. Nominations for this award can be made to any member of the GCTE board.
- Teacher Minigrants: GCTE funds special projects that will boost learning for students and offer innovative ways to address the K-12 ELA curriculum. Project ideas are limited only by your imagination. Grants vary from $50 to $500 and will support plans that are innovative and student-centered. Proposals must demonstrate potential for improvement in the K-12 ELA curriculum/classroom and have a direct impact on K-12 students.
- Book Study Grants: Book study grants are designed to support self-identified groups (3-7 members) interested in the sustained study of a particular text (e.g., a YA novel, a scholarly work, a practitioner-focused professional development text, etc.). Funding supports purchase of copies of the text for each participant.
